He retired after 20 years in the U.S. Army, serving tours in Vietnam, Korea and Germany. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sandra "Sandy" (Mace) Merritt; five children, Jason, Jonathan, Joey Jay, Wade Jay, Terry Bishop,Christine Merritt and Kelli Williams; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, George and Steven Merritt; six sisters, Donna Hurley, Beverly Hanagan, Nancy Smith, Sally Blike,Kelly Meqguire, and Amy Merritt; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.He was predeceased by his parents, Elbridge "Stubby" and Virginia (Cone) Merritt; one brother, Kenneth; a sister, Barbara; and a stepson, Tony Jay.

Joann Gentle Robertson 87, died at Gardiner Health Care Facility. She was born Jan. 31, 1927 at Houlton, the daughter of Karl and Bertha (McCready) Kittredge.

Joann was a graduate of Houlton High School, Class of 44. She attended Ricker College and graduated from Maine General as a registered nurse. She attended Court Street Baptist Church and the Littleton Baptist Church. Joann was an active member of the Littleton PTA and a life long member of the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum. She enjoyed singing in the Betmar chorus in Florida. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star and also a member of the Houlton Community Golf Course.

Joann is survived by her daughter Judy Gentle Hayward of Orlando, FL; three grandchildren Justin Hayward of Gray, Nathan Hayward and his wife Carolyn of Seattle, WA, Allison Hayward of Dover, NH; two great grandchildren Collin and Syliva Hayward both of Gray; her devoted companion Clair Longstaff of Houlton; stepchildren Howard and his wife Candy Robertson, Richard and his wife Penny Robertson, Hollie and her husband Scott Davis all of Monmouth; and several cousins. She was predeceased by her first husband Warren Gentle, her second husband Fred "Bud" Robertson, her son Doug Gentle and stepson Jim Robertson.

JoAnne Marie Higgs, 66, of Hartin Settlement NB, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at The Upper River Valley Hospital Waterville, NB. JoAnne was born in Houlton, Maine on June 4, 1947.
JoAnne is survived by her husband; John Higgs, Hartin Settlement, NB, father; Cedric Glidden and step mother; Via Glidden, daughter; Misty Higgs(Chris Schram), Alberta, son; Jamie Higgs (Karen), Debec, NB, and five grandchildren; Jacobi, Tayla, Kaitlyn, Bradley, Ashley, sister; Barbara Stewart, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joanne was predeceased by her mother; Mildred, and a brother; Darrell Glidden.
By request there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at The Carleton Funeral Home Chapel 337 Lockhart Mill Road Jacksonville, NB on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 2 PM. Interment will be held in Forest City Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation, Forest City Cemetery Fund or to a memorial of the donor’s choice.

He attended Wentworth College, Boston, and Husson University, Bangor. Joel retired from Lane Construction Co., where he worked for more than 30 years as the senior mechanical supervisor in their Bangor office. He loved the muscle cars of the 1960s and enjoyed spending time at East Grand Lake with family and friends. Joel is survived by his brother, Mac and his wife, Marion, of Sidney; nephew, Shane W. McLaughlin; niece, Ashlee L. McLaughlin; two great-nephews; aunt, Jean W. Terry. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Donald A. and Ethel W. McLaughlin; and his nephew, Ryan C. McLaughlin.

He passed away in the comfort of his home, after a long illness.
Jack graduated from Colby College in 1953. He embarked on a career in the newspaper business that spanned more than 30 years. He was manager and editor of the Houlton Pioneer Times and business manager at Northeast Publishing Co. overseeing four area papers. During the latter part of his tenure with the company he served as director of newspaper operations and executive editor. He was inducted in the Maine Press Association Hall of Fame 2004. Jack is survived by Esther, his wife of 57 years; three sons, Robert, John and James; one grandson. He was pre-deceased by his parents Robert and Marion Faulkner.

John B. Dunn, 73,died at his home June 15, 2014 He was born Oct. 8, 1940 in Houlton, the son of Donald H. and Ella (Barrett) Dunn. John graduated from Houlton High School, the New England Institute of Applied arts and Sciences and the National Foundation of Funeral Service School of Management. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic and after a tour in Germany returned home to take part in the family businesses, where he eventually became President of the Donald Dunn Funeral Home and Vice president of the Dunn Furniture Company. He was a communicant of St. Mary's of the Visitation Church. He served and was a past president of several professional and civic organizations including The Northern Maine Planning Commission and the Maine Funeral Directors Association. He was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Houlton Elks Lodge and a past president of several Maine Horse Associations. John loved spending time at Drew's Lake, especially if it included his family and especially the grandchildren that he loved so dearly. His other passions were gardening, feeding the birds, cooking, soaking up the sun on his boat and fly fishing. The annual fly fishing trip to Grand Lake Stream with the "crew" was always an event he looked forward to. He is survived by two sons; Bart Dunn of Houlton and David Dunn and his wife Terri (the daughter he never had) of Houlton; Grandchildren Barrett, Lizzie, Brandon, Madison and Alexander Dunn. A brother Frank B. Dunn all of Houlton and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents John was predeceased by the love of his life, Sandra Howland Dunn, a brother David B. Dunn. He will be remembered by two special friends,k his bumper pool partner John Jenkins, his fly fishing buddy Barrett Peabody and his constand companion Gypsy Rose II.

He was born June 2, 1931 in Houlton, the son of James & Astrid (Carstensen) Gardiner. John planted potatoes for over 60 years, worked in the woods, enjoyed horses and raising cattle. John had a great sense of humor and enjoyed playing tricks. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris (Fitzpatrick) Gardiner of Hodgdon; 6 children: Christina Mitchell of Gardiner, Brian & Lori Gardiner of Hammond, Ron Gardiner & Diana Barnes of Calais, Tammy & Doug Griffin of Hammond, Johnna & Tom Gilley of N. Yarmouth and Cindy Gardiner & Ronnie Fitzpatrick of Houlton; 5 grandchildren: Wendy, Kelli, Scott Abby, Kathryn as well as several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and a sister, Agnes Folsom of Houlton, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. John is predeceased by his parents, 2 grandchildren and 4 brothers.

John L. Putnam 92, Houlton, passed away peacefully Sept. 17, 2015. He was born November 15, 1924 in Houlton, the son of Aaron and Marie (Hacker) Putnam. Expect for a brief stint in the US Army, John lived his entire life at the family homestead in Houlton. He enjoyed walking his many boxers over the years on the rolling fields behind the house, tending his vegetable garden, and cross country skiing. John was an avid harness horse racing fan and an excellent golfer. He enjoyed many Saturday mornings teeing it up with his brother Hacker and cousins Albert and Fred Putnam, where he routinely broke 80. John was predeceased by his parents, his brother Aaron (Hacker), and sisters Elizabeth and Maria Louise.

He died with his son by his side at his residence. After high school he joined the U.S. Army. During his long career in the Army, he served as a cannoneer, gunner, recon sergeant, radar repair specialist and ATC tower operator. He was very proud of his time with the air borne, receiving several citations and ribbons before retiring in 1986. He is survived by his son, Clayton Clowes; his brother, Terry Clowes; three sisters, Linda Beaupre, Geraldine Richards and Joyce Marks; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Marcia (Parks) Clowes ; and his sister, Sandra Fritz.
