Enlisted in 1961 with classmate Dennis Wellman.and retired in 1985, Besides going to school, I spent most of my time as a pilot in the Air Defense Command flying the F-106 and T-33. I did serve a year in the Vietnam war as an A-1 pilot and a tour in Air Training Command teaching fledgling pilots how to fly.

Served initially as a 2nd Lt. at Fort Benjamin Harrison. Finance Officer Training was held there. Reported for active duty on October 16, 1966.
Rest of tour of duty was served at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Arrived there in January, 1967 in time to see the very first Super Bowl.
Second year at Fort Leonard Wood, I was in charge of group of enlisted men who had were not trained in processing payrolls. It was a challenging period...most of these men had just returned from Vietnam and were paying other Vietnam returnees who were being processed out. Payrolls were calculated by hand, had to be re-checked and all the soldiers were paid in cash.
