First was an MP in Berlin from 1956 to '57, then returned to Berlin as the civilian manager of Berlin Command's military banking facilities there from 1960 to '63 when the East Germans with Soviet help constructed the Wall in 1961. For my service there Berlin's Commanding General gave me the Guardian of Berlin's Freedom award when I returned to CONUS in 1963.

Attended pilot training at Lubbock, TX graduating in Jun 67. Back to KC-135s at Sacremento, CA and Spokane, WA. Flew special operations helicopters from Thailand supporting Vietnam missions. Returned in Apr 72 to attend Command and Staff College in Montgomery, AL. Assigned to Fairfield, CA in KC-135s as Squadron Operations Officer. Became Senior Controller of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Command Post. Posted to SAC Headquarters, Omaha, NE in 1976 -79. Became Chief, Unit Command Post Operations and was responsible for administrative support for all SAC Command Posts worldwide. Final assignment to Blytheville, AR as Director of Training. Retired with almost 25 years of service. Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross, two Meritorios Service Medals, seven Air Medals, Air Force Accomodation Medal, eight Outstanding Unit Awards, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Ribbon, Expeditionary Medal, nine Vietnam Campaign Ribbons, Longevity Medal, Markmanship Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. Flew a total of about 6000 hours of which about 2500 hours of combat time. Earned my Senior Navigator Wings, then my Command Pilot Wings.
