Eileen S. Lane (nee Smietana), longtime resident of Naperville, Illinois passed away from Alzheimer's disease on Monday March 13, 2023, at the age of 71, with her family at her side. Eileen was born in 1951 in Chicago to the late Walter and Lillian Smietana. Eileen and her family lived in Naperville for over 40 years. She was a longtime employee of Little Friends as a therapist and was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Naperville.
Eileen graduated from Willowbrook H.S. in Villa Park, IL in 1969 and from Miami University in Oxford, OH in 1972. She met Ron at college, and they married in 1972. The couple lived in Rogers Park, Chicago for 5 years while Ron attended law school and Eileen worked to support them. During their time in Chicago, Eileen also obtained her teaching certificate from Northeastern Illinois University. The couple moved to Clarendon Hills in 1977 where Andy was born, and then to Naperville in 1979, where Audrey was born. In 1988-89 the family hosted a foreign exchange student, Rodolfo Magana, from Honduras, who, with his family, have become a part of the Lane family.
Eileen worked in the Naperville school districts in various teaching capacities for many years and later returned to school at Illinois Benedictine University where she earned a master's degree in counselling psychology in 1995. Following her graduation, Eileen worked at Little Friends in its Parent Infant and Early Intervention programs and later as a private therapist.
Eileen lived with her Alzheimer's diagnosis for ten years during which she participated in several clinical studies at Rush University Hospital to advance research for a cure for Alzheimer's. Her father also passed away from the disease.
