About Lyle Jennings Croy, Jr., passed away on Monday, January 1, 2007 at the age of 84. He was born on April 19, 1922, in Vinton, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Cadd Croy; his parents, May S. and Lyle J. Croy; and two brothers, Clyde and Cecil Croy. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bova Croy; two daughters, Shirley C. Dean and Linda L. Bean; and grandson, Lyle Wade. With his marriage to Barbara, he gained an extended family. This included daughter, Brenda Dennis; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Jay Pate and Terry and Wesley Hambrick; and three grandsons, Justin Dillon, Jonathan Pate and Charles Lambert. Lyle attended William Byrd High School before joining the United States Army where he served in both the European and Pacific Theatres during World War II. He played Triple A baseball and coached various baseball, basketball and boxing programs for the Fraternal Order of Police and the Church League. He retired with 30 years service from the Roanoke City Police Department where he began his career as a uniformed officer. During the years he was promoted to Detective Sergeant and then became an instructor at the Police Academy. After retiring from the Police Department, he worked for many years creating furniture and restoring antiques. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 12 noon Thursday, January 4, 2007 at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel with Fr. Rob J. Cole officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, you may send donations in his memory to VA COPS, Post Office Box 3295, Richmond, Va. 23228 to support the families of fallen police officers in Virginia.
