About Hugh R. Durham, the son of Theodore and Mary Durham of Vinton, Virginia, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on March 19, 1947 and died without warning due to an automobile accident in Bedford County, Virginia on March 20, 2012. Hugh's life is distinguished by his loving marriage, love for his family, life-long friendships, professional dedication, and legendary personality. Hugh attended William Byrd High School in Vinton and is an avid fan of the University of Virginia Athletic Program. Hugh is a Veteran of the Vietnam War, having served his Country in the United States Marine Corps as an Infantryman. Hugh retired in 2010 after 43 years of faithful employment at Ingersoll-Rand/Atlas-Coptco of Roanoke. Hugh is preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Mary, and Sister Nancy Darnell. Hugh married the love of his life, Ms. Betty June Gibson of Roanoke, on July 3, 1968. Hugh experienced 43 wonderful years of marriage and is survived by his spouse and soul mate, Betty. Hugh is also survived by his loving son Hunter Durham, daughter-in-law Jessica Durham, and three grandchildren Sydnee, Jack, and Logan Durham; Siblings Charles Durham, Janie Fetter, Virginia Dillon, Dorothy Cummings, Eunice Kirby, Theodore Durham Junior; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. He is also survived by his canine companion, Tinkerbelle. Contributions may be made in Hugh's honor to the Roanoke Valley SPCA. Memorial service will be at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton at 10 am Monday, March 26, 2012 officiated by Rev. Walter B Failes, Jr. Inurnment will follow 12 noon at Mountain View Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm and from 6 to 8 pm Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 540 982-2221. Online condolences maybe expressed at www.oakeys.com.
