Navy, 20+ Years

Fighter pilot flying off Coral Sea, Ticonderoga, and Hancock. Had the distinction of playing in a softball tournament in the PI while Saigon folded. Had the honor to be the senior officer at Cubi Point handing the 5,000 plus Vietnam people that came back with the USS Hancock after the fall of South Vietnam. They were processed there and flown from Clark AFB to the US within 4 to 5 hours after processing. Flew the F-8 Crusader all of my 6 cruises to the Far East. Saw a lot of Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, Sandi Arabia and Singapore during these cruises. Made five cruises involving Vietnam. First was in 1962 flying photo recon over areas that later were used to make our future maps in the mid sixties to mid seventies. Logged over 500 day traps and about 115 night traps on 27 Charlie Class carriers. Made four cruises on the Hancock. Last plane I flew was the A3, a twin engine Douglas light bomber, on a night flight back to El Centro from Oklahoma City. The A3 carried enough fuel to fly anywhere you wanted in the United States from California. The Crusader was much faster and could fly from San Diego to Jacksonville, FL non-stop. Used it several times to bring back frozen beef steaks, carried in the ammo compartments, from Clinton, OK. Brought back the whole steer one time using two F-8s. Had a great military career flying one of the finest airplanes we had at the time. My first fighter squadron, VF-211 was the leading Mig Killer Squadron in the Navy until Randy Cunningham got his five kills. VF-211 had 7 Mig Kills. On my last combat cruise, I served as executive officer for VF-24 on the USS Hancock in 1975. I retired in November 1978 from NAF El Centro.
