William "Gary" McGuire
Class of 1967
Wm Gary McGuire graduated from VHS in 1967 and joined the Army at the height of the Vietnam War. Gary was not on any honor rolls and probably only did enough in school to get by, but his rewards would come later. He completed back to back tours of duty in the Republic of South Korea and Vietnam as an enlisted member and upon return to the United States and his parents home in Pritchard, Alabama, he joined the Active Reserves. During this break in service, Gary completed his Bachelors Degree from the University of South Alabama in Education while receiving his commission through the United States Army ROTC Program. He served another 20 years as an officer, having tours of duty around the world to include during the Conflict in Grenada and the first Iraqi War in 1990. While stattioned at Fort Benning, Georgia, he completed his Masters Degree from the University of Maryland's Extension Campus in Psychology. Gary ended his service time at Patrick Air Force Base in Melbourne, Florida where he is currently employed by the Department of Defense as a Senior Supervisor in Equal Opportunity, Diversity, and Cultural Competency Education and Training. Gary completed his PhD in 2002 from the University of Florida in Gainesville and continues to reside in Florida where he works. He is married to the former Nancy Winter (A Davidson High School Graduate) and they have raised 7 children in their lifetime. Gary's remaining siblings live in an around the Mobile area and three of his brothers finished high school at Vigor. He stays in touch with his older sister and loves to check out any news on the current events at Vigor...especially Football. When he comes back home for a family visit, he always comes by the school to see and remember the old days. Gary says, "If anything, I am living proof that Vigor High School Graduates can be very successful in life, so hang in there Wolves, there is life after high school." Best of luck in all you do.
