Assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Jan. 5 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during convoy operations in Najaf, Iraq.
Deployed to Iraq in late 2005, he worked to fight insurgents, manning a .50-caliber machine gun atop a Humvee.

Col DeAnda, 24+ years an active duty AF officer, currently serving in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs/TMA working on medical information systems to support the health care of all U.S. military personnel worldwide, veterans, and family members. Prior assignments: Squadron Commander, Vandenberg AFB, CA; Optometrist (six AF bases).
