Army, 3 Years
Spent 31 months in Germany, while Viet Nam was going on. Was gunner and squad leader on a 4.2 Mortor, 2nd Battlegroup 2nd infantry, combat support Co., at Gablingen Kaserne Base, Augsburg, Germany. Which now is defunct. I've been back several times over the years, really sad to see how it looks now. Also spent time at Dacau as Guard on american soldiers. Dachau itself was very sad as well. Spent time on the Berlin wall. Was there in Augsburg in 1960 when it was put up and was there in 1989 when it was torn down. Got both times in history! Incidently my wife of 50 yrs, last year, Nov 25, 2011, was born and raised in Rostock, Germany. Eastern controlled by Russians.

Class of 1974
Army, 6 Years
Began my military service at Fort Ord for Basic Training (D-2-3). Proceeded to Heavy Truck Driving School while there as well. After completion of that I was stationed at the Precidio of San Francisco where I was assigned to FORCECOM, and attached to the 6th Army Protocol Bureau where I drove for VIP's and General Staff who came to visit. (Loved the job).
Then off to Mannheim Germany where I was assigned to the 598th Trans. Co. and became the Company Driver/Orderly Room Clerk. I drove sick call every morning and pushed paper for the old man. It was a sham job, but I enjoyed traveling throughout Germany and seeing the country. I also got in a truck cab once in a while. We had commercial rigs, (International TranStars - a REALLY large version of a Mercedes lol). A big difference from the Sedan's in S.F.
