On Jan 28 1986 I had left the blockhouse for a meeting at the external tank building. Before the meeting was over, word came down that we had lost the Challenger (STS-25). By Oct 1986 the Vandenberg shuttle launch program was shut down. On July 21,2011 shuttle
Atlantis (STS-135) ended the shuttle program. Atlantis had been designed for polar launches, weatther satellites, etc.
