Stan H. Kossen
Class of 1949
Navy, 4 Years
Of all of America's eternal wars, this one was Korea. Not being a hero, I joined the US Navy. I was fortunate. At first I was assigned to a jet squadron getting ready to go to Korea on an aircraft carrier. I brown-nosed an officer who sent me instead to a school in Washington D.C. After that I was sent to a small base in Norfolk, VA, where I volunteered for the swimming team. Everyday I swam laps in the morning and taught the children of officers how to swim in the afternoon. In the evenings I attended a division of The College of William and Mary, where I earned a year of university education. Then I was sent to a ship that never went anywhere--a submarine tender in New London, Connecticut, where I became associate editor of the ship's newspaper, "The Tender Times." I looked for and found a lot of luck while in the Navy. After discharge, the GI Bill then paid for my University of Washington education, helping me to obtain a B.A. and an M.B.A. That's what this daddy did during the war, son.
