My Jr. Englsh teacher Leo Croteau was a Coronel In the AZ Army Guard. He told all of us guys that our Dads had saved this country in WW2 & asked us "what are you going to do about it? There was no draft in July of 1963, so there was no "draft to dodge, when I joined the Guard. I went to drills & summer camp during our Sr. year & to Basic at lovely (?) Ft. Polk, LA & completed my active obligation Jan/1968. I walk proudly in the Vet's Parade each Nov. in honor of all who made that final sacrifice to our nation. To any Vets, come join us. Kit Estes & I are proud to take part in honoring all Vets.

Coast Guard, 20+ Years
I flew as a MEDEVAC pilot at FT Bliss, Tx, instructor pilot at FT. Rucker, AL, and then as a CH-47 pilot and maintenance officer of the 213th Blackcats in Korea. While stationed at FT Eustis, VA, I discovered the Coast Guard needed aviators. Before long I found myself patrolling the islands of Hawaii in a Coast Guard HH-52 helicopter (someone had to do it!) We were then transferred to Naval Air Station (NAS) Milton, FL (Near Pensacola) and I was assigned to the VT-2 “Doerbirds†where I instructed future Coast Guard, Navy, and Marine aviators in T-34s. When that tour was complete, I flew Coast Guard HU-25s at NAS Corpus Christi and later T-44s as an instructor pilot assigned to VT-31 at Corpus. Corpus Christi was our last duty station before retiring in 1997.
