Entered US Navy after graduation from Radford in 1969. Was a Plankowner onboard USS Paul (DE-1080), served in Vietnam at the Naval Support Facility Danang. Finished my first hitch in the Navy at Fleet Training Group Pearl Harbor in 1973. Reenlisted in Navy 1978 as a Navy Hospital Corpsman. Served at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and transfered to USS Nimitz (CVN-68) during the ill fated rescue attempt of the American Iran Hostage Situation 1980. Released from active duty in 1980. Came back into the Navy as an Officer serving as a Registered Nurse at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia. Was medically retired in 1995.

Places that MSGT Richard Porter served with the military police included Greenland and Saudi Arabia. Richard’s impressive Military awards and decorations include the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Air Force Training Ribbon, Armed Forces Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems while active duty. Richard also attended the following Military Academy and programs; NCO Academy, NCO Leadership School, and NCO Preparatory.
