Dr. Dale Spannbauer
Class of 1967
Army, 20+ Years
Served from 1967 to 1991. Retired Command Sergeants Major. Hated the Army the first 2 years and then it just grew on me and I stayed over 24 years. Spent a tour in Vietnam in 1968 to 1969. They started the TET offensive just as I arrived, so that was my welcome. Served 1 year Infantry and several specialties after that. Went to more countries than I care to list here. Special assignments worth note, where Germany, Turkey, Italy, Ethiopia and several other South African and Mideast assignments. I would not have traded my experiences or learning opportunities of other ways of living for both impoverished and affluent people around the globe. The Army paid for my further education up to and through my PhD, so it was a wonderful life to have lived. On the down side it was hard on my family and as many prior military divorce was part of that down side.
