Robert Morris Oremland, 61, a McLean resident who operated Holiday Inn franchises in the Washington area, died Nov. 21 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He had cancer. Mr. Oremland did front-desk work for area Holiday Inn franchises after college and in time was managing them. He also helped open several franchises locally and in New York, New Jersey and Ohio. In the late 1990s, he and a few friends started Grand Duke Hotels LLC, a hotel operations venture. The partnership built and managed the Staybridge Suites executive-stay hotel in McLean and the Holiday Inn Select franchise in Chantilly. This fall, the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce named Mr. Oremland entrepreneur of the year. He was born in Washington and spent part of his teenage years in Silver Spring, where he was a graduate of Northwood High School. He also was a graduate of the University of Maryland. He helped run sporting events and did coaching work at McLean Youth Sports, Langley High School in McLean and the Northern Virginia Swimming League.



He was the son of Sol and Ethel Shirley (Banks) Oremland.
