Enlisted Soldier as an Armored Cav Scout; Commissoned as a Combat Arms Officer in January 1969. Retired in 2002. Managed to be involved in all the combat operational events during the time frame stated. First combat tour was in Vietnam as a special operations detachment commander with the 101st Airborne Division.

Was stationed or deployed to such areas as California, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia, Afghanistan, Iceland, Iraq, Italy, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. The majority of his 22-year military career was spent as an Air Force historian and public affairs practitioner. Concluded Air Force career as the Superintendent of the Public Affairs Office at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.—The Home of Air Force One.
While in the Air Force, I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and a Masters Degree in Executive Communications (Public Relations).

Spent my entire career in aircraft maintenance, my last job I was Production Superintendent, I directed flight line maintenance production of 300 personnel on 26 F-15E aircraft. I was stationed in Germany for 6 years, Bitburg and Ramstein Air Base, 1 year at Columbus AFB, Mississippi, 3 years at Plattsburgh AFB, NY, and 14 years at Seymour Johnson AFB, NC . Served In Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Rear Adm. Garry E. Hall enlisted in the Navy and later attended the United States Naval Academy graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering. He earned his Masters of Business Administration from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Hall served in Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadrons Light (HSL) 37 and 35, flying the SH-2F Sea Sprite and deploying aboard USS Rathburne (FF 1057), USS Cushing (DD 985) and USS Reasoner (FF 1063). He served as air boss and executive officer aboard USS Essex (LHD 2) with operations in Somalia, and as executive officer aboard USS Tarawa (LHA 1) operating in the Persian Gulf and the Horn of Africa.

He was the first commanding officer of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 51 in Atsugi, Japan, which won the Navy Battle “E” award. He also commanded Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 41, the west coast Fleet Replacement Squadron. His deep draft sea command was USS Tarawa (LHA 1). While deployed to the Middle East in 2000, Tarawa was involved in the rescue of USS Cole (DDG 67) following a terrorist attack in Yemen.

Ashore, Hall was a flight instructor at the west coast SH-2F Fleet Replacement Squadron (HSL 31). He served as aide De Camp to the vice director of Strategic Targeting at Offutt AFB, Neb., and following deep draft command he served as executive assistant to commander, Naval Air Forces/commander, Naval Air Force U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Hall’s first flag assignment was deputy director, J3, U.S. Central Command for Information Operations and Psychological Warfare during operation Enduring Freedom and operation Iraqi Freedom. His next assignment was as the assistant chief of staff for Intelligence (N2), Operations (N3) and Exercises (N7) for commander Allied Naval Forces North, NATO Headquarters Northwood U. K.

Hall took command of Amphibious Group 2 in Norfolk and transitioned the administrative-type command into Expeditionary Strike Group 2 and deployed as an operational staff. He served simultaneously as commander Task Force 51, commander Task Force 59, and commander Task Force 158 leading the Coalition responsible for protection of Iraqi oil infrastructure and training the Iraq Naval Forces. Returning from deployment, Hall assumed duties as commandant, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University, Fort McNair, Washington, DC.

Hall’s personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (three awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (four awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. While a lieutenant commander, he was recognized as the Navy’s Helicopter Pilot of the Year for sustained performance.

Leavenworth, Kansas, 1971-1972 spent a year with United Van Lines, 1973-1975 Division Chief, Military Transportation Management Command, Washington, DC. 1975-1978 commanded the 25th Transportation Movement Control Battalion, Seoul, Korea. 1978-1980 served at the Chief of Travel and Transportation Entitlements. Pentagon DC.
Received 3 Army Commendations Medals, 3 Meritorious Achievement Medals, 2 Bronze Stars. Legion of Merit, Army General Staff Badge and the Expert Infantry Badge

Married 9 months later. Transfered to Offutt AFB at Omaha, Neb. Hated Omaha. Discharged Oct 1952. Worked for CIA 4 years then Defense Mapping Agency for 25 years. Retired in 1985 after serving 35 years in gov't.
