He was the Navy's senior helicopter pilot who commanded 2 helicopter squadrons, an amphibious assault ship, an expeditionary strike group, and a senior service college. His 8 years of his service as an Admiral include 18 months deployed to the war and 24 months serving with NATO overseas.
