Michael Wayne Propst passed away at home in Virginia Beach on November 25, 2022. Born in Oakland, California, on March 23, 1954, Mike was the son of Lonnie Youther Propst and Mary Cole Propst. As part of a military family, he lived in a number of parts of the United States and in Newfoundland before the family moved to Chesapeake, Virginia. While completing his formal education at Indian River High School, he was active in ROTC. Serving honorably in the United States Air Force after graduation, he was stationed at a number of posts both in this country and in Korea. Returning to civilian life, Mike eventually began his 35-year career at Lombart Instrument where he worked most recently as a territory sales manager.
Mike was predeceased by his father, Lonnie Propst, and brothers William and Kenneth Propst. Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Karen Gargis Propst; his mother, Mary Cole Propst; his son, Anthony Propst (Melanie); his stepchildren, Jonathan Elam (Brittany) and Bridgette Raffo; his grandchildren, Ariyah Propst and Stella Elam; and a brother, Patrick Propst (Debbie).
Those who knew Mike will remember several notable qualities. Working until his death, Mike was always a consummate professional. Knowledgeable but understanding and helpful, he tried always to educate his customers while allowing them to make their own business decisions. Exceedingly well read, he had extensive knowledge of history and music, and he loved to sing. His love of family, kindness, delightful sense of humor, and proficiency with all things technical marked this exceptionally fine man.
A memorial service will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 1485 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, December 2, 2022. The Rev. Dr. Steve Frazier will officiate.
