About Me | Man's main task in life is to give birth to himself, to become what he potentially is. The most important product of his effort is his own personality.” Eric Fromm. I agree with that quote wholeheartedly. It implies that our past may shape us but it doesn’t have to ultimately define us. I believe that personality is fluid like a river and has strong and reliable aspects, like sunshine after the rain. The pieces of my personality are as colorful, intricate and interwoven as a puzzle. What’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. My name is Gordon. I’m that person with eyes that tell a story and a strong, caring handshake. In Welsh, Gordon is a combination of the word ‘Gor’ meaning “spacious” and ‘don’ meaning “fort”. As I reflect upon this, I find it’s fitting. I have been described as a place of protection, a lighthouse in the storm. And as for spacious? There is always room in my heart for individuals who treat me with mutual respect, kindness, and honesty. These are some of the character traits I value and hold high above others. In Irish, Gordon means “beloved”, and though self love is a journey of exploration that never truly ends, I realize I am intrinsically loved and valued. My other half, has discussed with me on several occasions the idea of her creating a charm bracelet marking the accomplishments and important milestones in her life. This is a good place to start. I guess if anyone asked me what symbols or ‘charms’ I relate to the most, they would be the caduceus and the hook and ladder of a fire company. Both of these things are near and dear to my heart. I was an EMT for many years, and it fostered my values of reliability, team work, genuine compassion, and the ability to think on my feet. In regards to the hook and ladder symbol of a fire department, this is also something that weaves through my personality like strong pieces of a basket. For as long as I can remember, I adored anything related to the lights and sirens, even as far back as 5 or 6 years old when I got to attend a Christmas gathering, while being transported in a fire truck. All in all, it was an adventurous occasion. There are many values that come to mind when you think of a firefighter, but one that stands out to me is that of bravery. In my research, I found that it goes back hundreds of years to the first need for such a service. The ladder was a symbol of fearlessness in attack as the scaling of walls with ladders was an extremely dangerous tactic used in laying siege to a castle. It is also a symbol of resolution. The scaling-ladder, that is one with hooks on the ends to go over the edge of a wall so that the ladder is not merely leaning against the castle, may be a reminder to stand carefully on guard. Bravery and resolution are two extremely important things to me. My bravery came through in the many instances while fighting fires and in my time in the Navy. But also in self awareness; as we don’t always find what we’re looking for when we look inside ourselves, and brush off cobwebs of pride and complacency. Sometimes you have to admit you’re a little lost in order to be found. And being resolute is a sign of bravery, when there are so many opportunities or excuses in life to waiver, or lay down your arms before fear. I’ve come to realize no matter how difficult a situation is, I have the ability to give myself credit where it’s due and do the right thing. As for the caduceus, Emergency Medicine runs through my blood, with a pulse all its own; strong, true and proudly. Throughout my time as an EMT-B and ‘Doc’, I have found an outlet for my compassion, and genuine desire to help someone in need. I met Nora by chance at the library but we had a very strong connection early on. I discovered she was interested in EMS as well, and started tutoring her. One of things she pointed out to me later was how much she admired and benefitted from my enthusiasm, patience, and creative ways of teaching concepts that would normally be hard to understand. A simple, enthused “Yes!” would light her up like a Christmas tree, she said, because she could see in my eyes how proud I was. Even on days where none of it seemed to click for her, my supportive spirit and sense of humor got her through until we were over that hill. I still see my altruistic nature come through when my knowledge or experience is needed at the drop of a hat, like someone needing basic medical attention or just someone to wait with until help arrives. I have a knack for helping people keep thei...(read more) |
