In Memory Of
Class of 1941
Passed Nov 14, 2012
William James Staten was born in Los Angeles, California on June 15, 1924. His parents were Lawrence Tullis Staten and Lillian Lucile Shaw Staten and his siblings were Bettyjane Louise Staten Gould and Robert Lawson Staten. Baptized in the Mennonite Church, Bill, as he was known to family and friends, passed away at his home in Medford, Oregon on November 14, 2012 at the age of 88.
Bill attended El Monte High School in El Monte, California and in 1941 and volunteered for service in the United States Navy in World War II immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor. As part of American’s Greatest Generation, he served at Pearl Harbor, in the Philippines, at the Battle of Midway, and in other areas of the South Pacific for nearly 8 years during the war.
Bill married Elizabeth Caroline Bradley on September 17, 1949 in Gold Hill, Oregon. Bill is survived by his son, Tim Staten of Medford and daughter in-law Sherri Staten. His grandchildren include Chloe Noelle Staten, Hunter Michael Staten, and Taylor Isabelle Hallett, all of whom he loved dearly. Bill is also survived by and enjoyed the love of many nieces and nephews. Sadly, his wife Betty preceded him in death after 52 years of marriage on March 29, 2002.
Bill enjoyed many interests in his lifetime, but he is most remembered for his generosity and kindness. In his younger years, he was an avid blood donator and was always welcomed by the Red Cross because of his rare blood type. Bill was always helping with volunteer activities; one of his favorite was Food For Friends, where he delivered meals to the homebound right up till his own passing. He enjoyed traveling, watching football and baseball, visiting with old friends and making new ones, fishing at his Rogue Retreat, scuba diving, and being the care giving guardian angel of his much loved grandchildren.
Services for Bill will be held in the chapel at Siskiyou Memorial Park on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 2 P.M.
We ask in lieu of flowers donations be made to Food for Friends.
Donations can be sent to 2130 Halsey St Medford, OR 97504
