Willie was our nextdoor neighbor along with his sister, Ginger. There were three houses next to each other and 2-3 kids in each house all within 3 years of each other. I was the oldest and Ginger and I hung out together. The Barkleys, the Farmers and the Thorns....we all played together in various sports and mischief.
Willie had the most infectious laugh and great smile. He was such a good hearted and kind individual. One time Willie, my brother Arthur and the two Thorn boys, Freddie and Billie build a cabin way back in the woods, of course leaving out Ginger and me. One day the boys were at Lake Ahoy, Ginger and I snuck back to the cabin to investigate. The mosquitos encouraged us not to investigate very long and we scurried back to our homes, never to investigate again. But that old cabin was their refuge.
Willie died much too young at about 52 or so and my brother Arthur died in 2002 at 58, again too young. They are both missed as are the days of our youth when we had friends and neighbors that were fun and trusted. I miss those people and those days.
