Class of 1942
Graduated Danbury High June 1942 then ertered U.S.Navy.Served in the Amphibious Force (invasion ships) In Eurpope. Went thru the North African Campaign, invasion of Sicily,Italy and at Omaha Beach June 6 @ Normandy. On 2nd. Trip to Sword we were bombarded by large German Gun Batteries resulting in many killed and wounded.I often wonder how I was able to survive since I was only a few feet from where the first of 6 shells hit.The war snded. We came home.We Had a 30 day leave to go home. Then we were off to the Pacific Side. Finally Retired from the navy in April 1962.Three months later I went with theUS Air Force Security Service (an intercept command monitoring the Iron Curtain (Russia)in bases from Scotland to Pakistan then transferred to Strategic Air Command (SAC) a total of 10 years.Went to work for FEMA (when it was a good place to work) working on disasters for 21 years. Now living in Charleston S.C. Where I retired from the navy.(No snow and ice down here). All family and friends from my neighbor hood are all gone so I don't have to go to Danbury anymore as much as I would like to.I this is the only way I could to get this msg. to you. Do you know anyone from 1942 and or WW2 Veterans.I was wondering how how many of us are left.On Dec. 21 I will be 90 years old and still very active going to high schools talking to ROCT cadets etc.I have told the stories so many times that I am beginning to believe them myself.I think I am logged in with but forgot sign sign in stuff.Thanks.Happy Hatters Day.Should have one.By The way when we landed I met a young African boy.He spoke good English. He asked me where I was from.I told him.To my surprise he said Oh, The Hat City.i guess in our time history and geography was universal.
