Gary L Dixon
Class of 1977
Air Force, 6 Years
I served in the Air Force from 1978 - 1984.
I was slated to be a firefighter, but 3 weeks before my enlistment date. My recruter calls to inform me that my slot in fire science tech school wouldnt be avalible to me untill feb 79. . So I would have had to do an delay enlistment of about 9 months. i said i might talk my self out of enlisting in 9 months. He knew I wasnt kidding. I wasnt an easy sale to begin with. Then the salesman went to work. By the time iI hung up the phone. I went from a fireman to a cop. And. I had less than 3 hours to get my self to the bus for Oakand. Because my new career field was in critical status. There were a couple perks. 2 stripes out of basic. And they let me choose my first duty assignment.. What was I thinking.Pease AFB New Hampshire. I tested for promotion made E-5 in less than 3 years. But because not enough time in service. if I wanted it I had to extend 23 months.. And then they even sweetened the deal. My next assignment would be McClellan Afb. What a country. And even now I would not change a thing. The 6 years I spent in our Military. Was 6 of the best years of my life. .
