Coast Guard, 4 Years
His first 3 years in the Guard Mike was stationed on the USCG Cutter Gresham which was the 1st Coast Guard ship to be sent to patrol the waters and rivers of Vietnam. He was designated the ship’s official photographer which entailed detaining and boarding any Vietnamese or Vietcong vessel to inspect for contraband or enemy soldiers, taking official photographs of confiscated arms and goods as well as recording and documenting events for official files. His tour of Vietnam lasted 1 year which was difficult for he and his wife who was also a 1963 Cap grad. This long separation was made more difficult because of the dangers involved and since the Vietnamese War was controversial and included conflict for our US servicemen and their families.
