Deputy Chief of Staff for Stability Operations
ISAF Joint Command - Kabul, Afghanistan
Mike Dumont is a career member of the Senior Executive Service assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, with duty in Kabul, Afghanistan. In previous assignments with OSD, Mr. Dumont has served as Principal Director for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism; Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations Capabilities; Principal Director for African Affairs; Principal Director for Russia, Ukraine & Eurasia Policy; Principal Director for Middle East Affairs; and as the Defense Policy Advisor to Commander, U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (SACEUR).
Prior to joining the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Mr. Dumont served as a Federal prosecutor in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where he investigated and prosecuted highly complex domestic and international white-collar criminal cases. He also managed justice sector reform and training programs in support of Federal prosecutors assigned to Iraq.
Before attending law school, Mr. Dumont served over five years on active duty in the U.S. Army as an Army Aviator and paratrooper. He held positions as a flight platoon leader in the Middle East and as an aviation task force executive officer in Central America. Upon leaving the Army in 1990, Mr. Dumont affiliated with the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Naval Aviator.
As a Navy officer, he has served as Chief of Staff, Office of the U.S. Defense Representative to Pakistan; and as Special Assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. Mr. Dumont has also commanded a Navy CSAR/Special Warfare support helicopter squadron during both Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM; the Navy Reserve unit of the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON; the Navy Detachment at Site-R; the Navy Reserve unit of OPNAV N3/N5; and the Joint Reserve unit of the U.S. Military Delegation to the NATO Military Committee in Brussels, Belgium. He has earned expeditionary medals for combat tours in Central America, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Mr. Dumont holds the rank of Rear Admiral (Lower half) in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Dumont holds a B.A. degree from the University of Southern Maine; a J.D. degree from Suffolk University Law School; an M.S. degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College; and an M.S. degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College where he was a Distinguished Graduate in the Class of 2008. Mr. Dumont is also a graduate of the Joint Flag Officer Warfighting Course; the Combined Force Maritime Component Commander (CFMCC) Flag Officer Course; and the Federal SES Candidate Development Program at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
