Robert "Bob" Oliver Davis Sr., 70, of Broadway, Va., died April 24, 2011, at his son's residence in Elkton.

He was born Sept. 27, 1940, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Ralph Oliver and Mildred Boyers Davis.

He was a ground maintenance worker at Massanutten Resort. He was a member of Mount Carmel United Brethren in Christ Church in Fulks Run, where he sang in the church choir. He also sang in a traveling church group. He graduated from Broadway High School in 1959. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and working with the Special Olympics.

Surviving are a daughter, Terri Ann Davis of Broadway; a son, Robert O. Davis Jr. and wife, Kay, of Elkton; a brother, Ronald Davis and wife, Anna, of Lacey Spring; two sisters, Sherry Ritchie of Lacey Spring and Debbie Smith and husband, Gary, of Broadway; grandchildren, Craig Taylor II and wife, Clisty, Kori Roach and Taylor Roach; and great- grandchildren, Tayvia Taylor and Craig Taylor III.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Roger "Butch" Davis.

Barbara A. Emswiler, 70

Barbara Ann Emswiler, 70, died April 24, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient.
Mrs. Emswiler was born March 7, 1940 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late William Jennings and Elenora Frye Biller. Mrs. Emswiler worked as the office manager at Flat Rock Quarry for many years. She was a member of the South Harrisonburg Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
On June 11, 1959, she married James Byron Emswiler who preceded her in death on April 12, 2010.
Surviving are two sons, James Myron Emswiler and wife Cherie of Fishersville; Kevin Brent Emswiler and wife Karen of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Mary Mundy of Harrisonburg; Linda Trumbo of Fulks Run; two step grandsons, Cody Comer and Kyle Comer. Mrs. Emswiler was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Shipp and a brother Boyd Biller.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 3p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses with Aaron Einstein officiating. The burial will be private.
The family will receive friends at the Kingdom Hall following the memorial service.
Honoring her wishes to be cremated, McMullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born May 19, 1939, in Winchester, and was a daughter of the late John William Fawley and Frances Wine Fawley Hartman.

She had worked at Shen Valley Meat Packers, and was a member of Sunset Drive United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in Broadway.

She is survived by aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The Rev. Robert Throckmorton Jr. will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. Wednesday at Linville Creek Cemetery in Broadway. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Friday at Sunset Drive United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

The casket will be closed.

Surrounded by his family, Gary Wayne Lawson passed away peacefully at his home in Purcellville, Virginia on July 27, 2011. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years Linda Linhoss Lawson.

Gary was born March 4, 1945 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the son of the late Vernon Curtis and Dorothy Cassidy Lawson.

He was a devoted family man and arguably the world’s best granddad.

The owner of Circle Auto Body since the late 1970’s – he was an affiliate of the Washington Metropolitan Auto Body Association – and was highly respected throughout the auto body industry. He enjoyed golfing, classic cars, and was an avid football fan, holding season tickets to the Washington Redskins.

Gary was a member of the U.S. Army and served with distinction for three years in Thailand.

In addition to his wife, he is Survived by his mother “Dot” of Harrisonburg, VA; a daughter, Gina Lawson Burns and her husband, Terry of Purcellville, VA; a sister, Judy Lawson and her husband, George Dellyssee of Harrisonburg, VA; two brother-in-laws, Kenneth Linhoss and his wife, Judy and Charles Linhoss all of Harrisonburg, VA; and three grandchildren, Trevor Wayne Burns, Kylie Renee Jenkins and Tanner Michael Burns all of Purcellville, VA. 
A daughter, Stacey Michelle Lawson preceded him in death.

Family will gather for visitation from 6 – 8 P.M. Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Enders & Shirley Funeral Home in Berryville, VA. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 2, at the Enders & Shirley Chapel with Rev. Mike Minter officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.

Ron Hottinger, age 70 of Lyons, died Monday, December 28, 2009 in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah after an extended illness. He was a native of Bergton, Virginia, a graduate of Broadway High School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force with more than eight years of service. After his military service he worked with the W.T. Grant Department Store for several years, and lived in Mt. Pleasant and Charleston, South Carolina, and Jacksonville, Florida. He retuned to Mt. Pleasant and retired in 2004 from K-Mart after twenty-five years of service. He then moved to Toombs County where he became an active member in the First United Methodist Church of Lyons and the John Durst Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Chrissa Hottinger.

Mr. Hottinger is survived by his wife, Frances Kennedy Hottinger of Lyons, one daughter, Tracy Gaskins and husband Joey of Goose Creek, South Carolina, two grandchildren, Julia and Joseph Gaskins of Goose Creek, four sisters, Ruby Ennis of Bergton; Velma Lantz of Harrisburg, Virginia; Fay Hottinger of Broadway, Virginia; and Lorna Kirby of Franklin, Kentucky, two brothers, Richard Hottinger of Phenix, Alabama and Robert Hottinger of Bergton, and several nieces and nephews.

Nelson Eugene Trumbo, 72, of Fulks Run, died Nov. 21, 2011, at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.

He was born July 20, 1939, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Trovillo Jay and Mary Leona Neff Trumbo.

He was a farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a former member of the Fulks Run Ruritan Club.

On June 16, 1967, he married the former Shirley Keister, who survives.

He is also survived by a son, Nathan Trumbo of Fulks Run; a brother, Richard Trumbo of Fulks Run; and two sisters, Phyllis Mason of Broadway and Sue Bowman of Fulks Run.

Ronnie Fulk and Jerry Shiflet will conduct a funeral service Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mountain Grove Church of the Brethren in Fulks Run. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Barbara Orebaugh Reyes, 68, of Broadway, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Reyes was born March 5, 1940, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Pasco and Reta Orebaugh.

She graduated from Broadway High School and was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker.

On May 9, 1992, she married Enrique Reyes, who survives.

She is also survived by a son, Kevin High; three daughters, Mari Baber, Christine Heishman, and Ella Watson; four stepchildren, Enrique Reyes Jr., Eloy Reyes Sr., Thomas Reyes Sr., and Esperanza Ortiz; a brother, Bruce Orebaugh; five grandchildren, 10 stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were pending Friday night at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Carolyn Lee Simmons, 67, of 5516 North Valley Pike, Harrisonburg, died Friday, March 7, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Ms. Simmons was born March 26, 1940, in Upper Tract, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Forrest Roscoe and Anna Lee Kile Simmons.

She worked for Peoples Life Insurance Company for over 40 years and later worked at James Madison University. She sold Avon products and was a member of the Pilot Club of Harrisonburg and the Shekhinah Tabernacle.

She is survived by a sister, Treva Orebaugh, and a brother, William R. Simmons, both of Timberville; two nieces and one nephew.

The Revs. Sam Sponaugle and Hiji Yu will conduct the funeral 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at Rader Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 this evening at the funeral home.

Wendell M. Steele, 69

Wendell M. Steele, 69, of Harrisonburg, passed away Sept. 30, 2010, at his home with hospice care.

He was the son of the late Clarence L. and Dorothy W. Steele and was born at Rockingham Memorial Hospital on Nov 5, 1940.

Mr. Steele attended Park View Elementary, graduated from Broadway High School and Madison College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965.

On Oct. 23, 1965, he was united in marriage to Anna Hayden, who survives.

He began his banking career at First National Bank, later graduating from the Virginia Bankers School. In 1985, he became self-employed as an accountant. Throughout his life Wendell was active in many civic groups and community projects. He was a lifetime member of the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, a member of Fire Company No. 1 and was a former member of the Harrisonburg Lions Club, where he served as treasurer. He was also a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, where he served as financial secretary for a number of years.

Wendell loved his family, music, animals, and fed the birds daily. He was a gentle, kind, caring, nonjudgmental person in whom people felt able to confide. Wendell was always generous with his time and skills, willing to help those in need.

He is survived by two daughters, Wendi J. Steele of Richmond and Traci H. Steele of Bisbee, Ariz.; his in-laws, Joe and Crystal Hayden of Harrisonburg; one sister, Linda Suter and husband, Lonnie, of Purcellville; a number of nieces and nephews; and his beloved canine companion, Spike; as well as a host of friends, many of whom he considered as family.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elaine S. Chittum and Janet K. Steele.

The family will receive friends 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at The Club, 120 Waterman Drive, Harrisonburg, or any time at his home, 681 Alleghany Ave., Harrisonburg.

A celebration of life service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at Otterbein United Methodist Church with the Revs. Glen Langston and Jim Grogan officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
