Time Runs Out And Bourne Bows To Dennis-Yarmouth
Bourne lost a tough decision to Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School in the rain Saturday, bowing 12-8.
The BHS squad showed the loss of Dave Archambeault and Bob Driscoll, both of whom suffered knee injuries in the Dartmouth game last week, and return of Bob Corradi. who had also been out with a knee injury and was back sooner than had been expected.
Bourne's lone score came in the second period when a pass from Corradi to Cunningham set up the touchdown on the 30 yard line of Dennis-Yarmouth. From there speedster Bob Pipkins carried the ball 30 yards into the end zone. For the point after touchdown Pipkins was again called upon and was successful in scoring the two pointer leaving the score 12-8 at half time. Regional scoring was done by Whipple and McNeil.
Standouts for Bourne on defense were Phil Cunningham, who made 25 tackles, Bob Pipkins, who made 15, Ed Watt, who along with Gene Sweeney played good ball in the line on defense. Bourne's defensive, as usual clicked very well except for one long run by Dennis-Yarmouth which ended in a touchdown by Whipple. Bob Anderson was a standout on his fine job of offensive downfield blocking. Bob Boyd also played a very good game at offensive tackle.
Late in the fourth period Bourne put together some fine offensive play which drove within Dennis-Yarmouth nine yard line and would have scored if time permitted. However the sound of gun was heard and the game ended at 12-8.
Dennis-Yarmouth quarterback, until this game, was high scorer on the Cape but Bourne's defense refused to let him continue with this honor. Pipkins, Bourne halfback grabbed the honors on the Cape in scoring caught a Corradi pass to set up Bourne's score by adding eight points to his 12 previous making 20 total.
Bourne's chances of copping the newly formed league are still within sight as Bourne has lost only one league game to Somerset. Final league games are with Case, Wareham and Barnstable. If Bourne can pull out these three final games and hope for a little luck with Somerset dropping one or two games they will have a chance to sneak in by way of the back door.
The game this Saturday will be against Barnstable on Bourne's Laurence B. Jackson Memorial Field.
