Bourne HIgh School 50th Reunion
Class of 1961
Bourne reunion recalls old times
August 11, 2011
BOURNE
George Cardoza came home from San Diego to attend his 50th Bourne High School Reunion Saturday night at the Canal Club.
Philip Jacobs came across the canal from Buzzards Bay. They were the only members of their class in attendance.
The Class of ’61 holds distinction on two fronts. It was the last class to leave BHS when it was located in the old Coady School at Cotuit Road, Bourne village. It was the first class to graduate that June from what was the new building at Trowbridge Road.
“There was joy and there was sadness in that move,” Cardoza recalled. “We were getting out of the old and into the new. We were in double sessions. Being an athlete, that was difficult. Not that it brought us all ‘Ws’ in football. We had to practice at night with the lights on in Sagamore.”
Cardoza and Jacobs agree their favorite teachers were Bill Butler and Chuck Lindberg.
“Bill Butler by far was the best teacher in that school,” Jacobs said. “He was a class act all the way.”
Cardoza thought much the same about Lindberg. “He taught geography and world history,” Cardoza said. “He was the assistant football coach. I liked him both on the field and in the classroom.”
The reunion was coordinated by the Bourne High School Alumni Association for all BHS classes, but members said it was apparent the low 1961 turnout was attributed to that group holding its own reunion.
The evening was filled with music from the past: “Come Fly With Me,” “Apple Blossom Time,” Love is a Many Splendored Thing” and “It Had to Be You,” among others.
Special honors and flowers went to Flo Patterson, Class of 1936, Don Jacobs ’37, Bud Loring ’41, Cora Dell and Christine Farber ’42 and Mary McDonough ’44.
Raffle prizes included a 12-pound lobster and gift cards to area restaurants.
