Joan Ojala Wins Sweepstakes At Barnstable Fair

Miss Ojala Wins Sweepstakes At Barnstable Fair
Miss Joan Ojala was sweepstakes winner at the Barnstable County Fair last week with a total of 420 points earned with first and second place ribbons for her sheep and poultry. If she wins the Walter Mayo trophy for two more years, she retains it permanently. Of the 4-H Club in Bourne, entrants at the Fair included Pete r Mackesy, Virginia Peebles, Neil Minihan, Ann Pippin, John Phaneuf, Carol Worcester, Tom Brown, Stanley Eldridge, Doris Loeser and Judy Bonvie.
Walter G. Bruce, County 4-H agent, announced the sheep awards at County fair. Ribbons went to Joan Ojala, Buzzards Bay, Montadale ram lamb; Peter Mackesy, Monument Beach, Montadale aged ewe; Virginia Peebles, pure Cheviot ewe lamb, 1st and 2nd, pure Cheviot ram lamb, aged owe; Joan Ojala, product of ewe class. Miss Peebles was also awarded a Cheviot special for outstanding sheep in the show.
Poultry awards on American Standard of Perfection went to Joan Ojala, first and second for SCRI Red Cock; buff leghorn cock, S.C. buff leghorn cockerel, first and second; SCRI red pullet, first and second; S.C. buff leghorn old trio, buff leghorn young trio. Neil Minihan took prizes for his SCRI, red young trio and buff Orpington cock.
In the Commercial Breed Poultry, Neil Minihan won the sweepstakes. He was awarded ribbons for market birds (cockerels), fowl, New Hampshire hen, S.C, white leghorn hen. He was also first in poultry judging school and contest. First and second place for Black Austratorp hen and Black Austratorp cock was won by Ann Pippin of Sagamore Beach. She had a first in showmanship, Miss Ojala won a ribbon for one dozen jumbo brown eggs. Miss Peebles won two firsts for old drake and odd duck.
In the rabbit class Virginia Peebles gained a first for an old and young doe. Tom Brown, 12, who entered county fair competition for the first time this year, came off with a showmanship ribbon. Miss Ojala was awarded two firsts and Miss Peebles two seconds.
