William "Bill" Cruse First BHS Senior to Win National Merit Scholarship

College Teaching is the Goal of Honor Student

William O. Cruse Jr., a National Merit scholarship finalist, has been presented a National Merit Award of a four-year scholarship.

He is the first Bourne High School senior to win this award.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. William O. Cruse of Sylvan Road, Pocasset, Bill will enter Williams College, where he plans to major in political economy. He hopes then to take graduate work and teach on the college level.

Bill was representative of Bourne High School at the third annual conference on the atom in Chicago last fall, sponsored by the NEGEA. He has entered projects in each of the school science fairs.

Bill is president of the Bourne Chapter of the National Honor Society, has played trombone in the Shawme Band and Orchestra since his sixth grade.

He is a member of the Nobska Chapter, Order of Demolay, Cape Cod Astronomy Club, and is president of the Senior Fellowship at the Pocasset Baptist Church.

His hobbies Include sailing the Sailfish which he and his father built in the spring of his freshman year.

He worked this winter at the pharmacy at Pocasset and will be working with boats at Camp Cohasset this summer.
