Summer of Travel in Europe is Ahead For Leader of Bourne Methodist Youth

Allen Smith flies from New York this evening as one of 20 Methodist youths of the country who will represent the United States on the European travel seminar and at the World Methodist Conference in Oslo, Norway.

He is son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick C. Smith of Gray Gables, who with their other son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Smith of Buzzards Bay, drove to New York today to see him off and will return on Saturday.

Allen became deeply interested in the church when, in his sophomore year at high school, he joined the Senior Methodist Youth fellowship.

This was the first year the Rev. Sherwood A. Treadwell and his assistant Louis Miles were with the Bourne parish. His work with the group increased and the following year he was elected president.

The fellowship increased their pledge to the Methodist Youth Fund, which is used for overseas missions, to $200 which was one fourth the entire New England Southern conference pledge from senior youth fellowships.

During that year he was sent as a delegate from the Bourne church to the Methodist Youth Convocation at Purdue university in Indiana.

The .following year he was treasurer of the Bourne group and was elected president of the Cape Cod sub-district Methodist Youth Fellowship. During that year the Bourne group went to Washington, D.C. where they met government officials and toured the city. The group raised $1,006 during the year, one half of which was given for its pledge and other activities of the. church.
