Chosen for Girls State
Miss Carolyn Mathews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Mathews of Puritan Road, Buzzards Bay, has been selected as Bourne delegate to Girls State to be held this year on the campus of the state college at Bridgewater the week of June 14 through 20.
In making the announcement, Mrs. Leland F. Perry, president of the Bourne unit of the American Legion Auxiliary 230, the sponsoring organization, said that Miss Mathews will attend this 17th annual session as one of 225 juniors from high schools throughout the commonwealth selected for scholastic ability and potential leadership. They will set up and operate a miniature state government during that week, to study the duties of public officials, structure of town, city, county and state government.
Miss Mathews was inducted into the James F. Peebles chapter of the National Honor Society at Bourne High School this year, where she is also a member of the French Club and the Chorus. She is also a member of the Wareham Order of Rainbow and works part time in the Cataumet Telephone Exchange. She enjoys swimming and records but her special hobby is sewing and she makes many clothes for herself. She plans to continue her studies to become a physiotherapist.
