Principal Stahura Sees Peace in Strong Stand
"No one knows what the enemy will do." said Mr. Walter Stahura, principal of Bourne High. "However, the experience of this country with Russia over the last few years teaches us that once one shows courage in standing up to Russia, she will back away. This has been the experience of Ambassador Lodge through the United Nations and former Vice President Richard Nixon, who had the courage to peacefully assert himself on Russian soil.
"It would appear that no man in his right senses would deliberately provoke an atomic war. Certainly Russia's bed is not one of roses. She must know that her relations with Red China aren't amicable and that Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Hungry, Rumania, and Czechoslovakia are waiting for an opportunity to rise in their own behalf against her. She must also be cognizant of the fact that she is well surrounded by other countries which will be able to see adequate weapons for her destruction.
President Kennedy has committed this nation to a proposition from which there is no turning back. The establishment of a strong Russian influence in this hemisphere is not only contrary to the Monroe Doctrine, but places the entire hemisphere in a situation of extreme precariousness, indeed anger.
This is the time for all of us to rally and stand firmly behind our country's commitment, not turning back, but rather proceeding with the elimination of Cuban and Russian missiles, capable of carrying atomic war and pointed at most of the United States, Canada, all of Mexico, Central America, and most of South America, were following the proper steps if the protection of not only ourselves but of this hemisphere.
"Future history will proclaim that in so doing the United States cannot be named an aggressor nation. Indeed it is our fervent hope that we shall be regarded as a nation which has then done everything within its power to maintain the peace of the world. To retreat now would only postpone the inevitable, and perhaps this is a better time to face up to an awkward situation than any other. God willing, our course is clear. Humanity has too much at stake to allow any further expansion in the part of our enemy. We hope the elimination of Castro and his regime will make for a strong hemisphere of friendly nations that will work together for the benefit of all human kind."
