Bourne High School Class of '62 knows how to party.

The Bourne High School Class of 1962 knows how to party. Their reunions are much more than sedates affairs where everyone gathers in a room, eats a chicken dinner and heads down memory lane for three hours, celebrating those who have changed over the years and wondering about those who haven’t.

The class, celebrating its 50 years out of Bourne High School, gathered again Saturday night, Aug. 11, helping fill the Canal Club at the Trowbridge Tavern during the annual Bourne High School Alumni Association Reunion.

It was a happy group.

Members had already returned to town, attended the Thursday night concert in the Main Street Park, toured Otis Air National Guard Base and BHS, enjoyed a pizza party, visited Atwood’s that became Gert’s and is now the Trading Post Lounge at Five Corners, took a boat ride and were set Sunday afternoon to enjoy a lobster boil at Scenic Park?.
?“We were always active,” class president Jack Sweeney said. “Still are. We try to do this every five years. We have people back this year from Alaska, Texas and Oklahoma. Half of the class was base kids. We called them ‘Campers’ from Camp Edwards

“It was the Townies and the Campers,” Sweeney said. “We razzed each other, but we all got along real well.?"

?Sweeney left Bourne for the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated and was drafted within a month. Then he was shipped to Vietnam. “I should have gotten myself into ROTC,” he said Saturday night. “But it all worked out.”

The classmates still enjoy each other. There were reunion stories about teen hangouts during the early 1960s; notably Aptucxet and Bumps Pond. But the tales about what happened there still would not be repeated on a reunion evening.

A formative time to graduate and leave Bourne, as many did? The graduates said it was. A different America. Some recalled the Cuban missile crisis in October that year.

The Class of ’62 had its standouts; Robert Corradi and Becky Braley in athletics, and Danny Kemp who went to Harvard.

Toni McAvoy was crowned Miss Armed Forces her senior year. Her dad was an Air Force pilot assigned to Otis. She went off to college in Cleveland and later to nursing school.

The group was the first class to spend a complete year in the new high school across Trowbridge Road from the old BHS at Cotuit Road. There were stories about how double sessions worked to cripple sports,

Also attending the association reunion were Flo Patterson (BHS ’36), Christine Milliken Farber (1942) and Donald Jacobs (’37).
