Air Force Flier Joins Air Line
LIEUT. EDWIN WHEELER
Edwin F. Wheeler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frances Wheeler of Worcester Avenue, Monument Beach, received his discharge from the Air Force as First Lieutenant last week and spent the weekend with his parents. He left on Sunday to begin his employment with the Atlantic division of Pan American World Airways Company as a pilot on D-C 7Cs. He will be stationed at New York International Airport in New York City flying trans-Atlantic flights to all parts of Europe, Scandinavia and South Africa. At present he is attending a six-week Pan American orientation school in New York City.
Mr. Wheeler was graduated from Bourne High school in the class of 1950 and attended the University of Maine for two years. On January 1, 1953, having passed the tests, he left to join the United States Air Force and entered the aviation cadet training school at Lackland Air Force base at San Antonio, Texas. In March 1954 he received his commission as Second Lieut, and subsequently has received his First Lieut, commission. He has accumulated over 3,000 hours of accident free flying time and has been Aircraft Commander on C-54 transports for the Military Air Transport Service for two years out of Charleston, South Carolina.
Lieut. Wheeler, who flew trans-Atlantic to all parts of Europe and South Africa also flew 51 flights to Thule, Greenland and worked on the air-lift for Hungarian refugees.
