Science Award to Eugene Sweeney Jr.

Eugene G. Sweeney, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene G. Sweeney of Puritan Road, Buzzards Bay, has won the Bausch and Lomb Science Award at Bourne High School. He also has been chosen as representative from Bourne to participate in Student Government Day in Boston on March 2.

Last week he acted as Selectman in Bourne Student Government Day.

He has been president of his class for the past two years and played on the football team this year as tackle and guard. He has been a Boy Scout, 4-H Club member, pitcher on the Little League Baseball team, and altar boy at St. Margaret's Church in Buzzards Bay.

He has been a member of Aputcxet Rifle Club since he was old enough to be eligible to join and served as president for one year. Last summer he worked as relief lifeguard in Bourne, rotating among all the beaches. He was one of only two in the BHS Senior class to receive letters of commendation for a score in the top three percent of the National Merit Scholarship tests taken last April.

Last summer he spent a week at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where he lived in a dormitory, and took various aptitude tests. He has received notice of his acceptance at that college. He plans to study engineering.
