Graduation Last Night Ends BHS Careers For 39
The Shawme Orchestra played and Major Daniel James Jr. of Otis Air Force base spoke on Americanism as 39 members of the Bourne High School senior class last night received their diplomas from Allison R. Cook of the School Committee.
Among the graduates was Mr. Cook's daughter Nancy, valedictorian of her class.
The audience of parents and friends was welcomed by Warren Freeman, who also presented the class gift, accepted by Victor Kim. President of the Class of '56. Cynthia Coppi read the class ode. Principal Walter J. Stahura announced the scholarships, awards and prizes.
Graduating seniors were Diane Bocsse. Robert Bradley, Anna May Casanova, Frederick A. Cassidy, Sonya Clouette. Charles D. Collis, Nancy Cook, Cynthia Anne Coppi, Elliott T. Denison, Edgar F. Eldredge, Patricia Ann Ellis, Warren Freeman, Carol Gavazza, Lucia Jenkins, Theresa Labretto, Rita LaRiviere, June Lichtenstein, Donald L. Lince, Wayne K. Lowcock. Mary Ann Mendes. Sylvia Michela, Frederick J. Mitchell, Phyllis Peckman, Ella Hope Philbrick, Sterling Pina, Shirley Remick. Richard Rovatti, Susanne Ryder, William R. Savage, Charles W. Stover, James W. Sylvia Jr.. Tobey Taylor, Joseph Van Auken, Esther Wallace, Helen Wallace, Patricia Ann Waterman. Robert Weston Jr., Frederick Winterbottom and Harriet Wright.
A last assembly last Friday opened a busy final week for members of the Bourne High School graduating class. Robert Weston was master of ceremonies for the program, and a Maritime Academy ensemble played.
Freshmen Marcia Sorenti and Robert Merchant and sophomore Robert Cushing gave the underclassmen's view of the graduating seniors. Faith Jackson, a junior, gave a farewell to the class of 1955 and junior class president Victor Kim spoke.
Tobey Taylor sang and two other seniors, Lucia Jenkins and Sonya Clouette presented a flower to each of the graduates with an appropriate verse.
Among awards presented by principal Walter J. Stahura, Nancy Cook received the Reader's Digest award as highest ranking student; Theresa Labretto, the Crowell-Collier award for salesmanship; Donald Lince, Bausch and Lomb award for excellence in physics; Sylvia Michela, Becker Junior College award for excellence in commercial subjects and the DAR Good Citizenship award.
Faculty and student body joined in giving a gold watch, presented by Mr. Stahura, to Mrs. Geraldine Watts who is ending more than ten years service in the high school cafeteria.
The Rev. F. F. Peterson, D.D. of Pocasset addressed the graduates in the baccalaureate service Sunday morning at the Dr. George W. Dainty auditorium of the high school.
Carlton Thorne directed a student chorus, accompanied by Nancy Wheeler. The seniors sang the class ode, written by Cynthia Coppi.
Members of the B.H.S. graduating class will be guests of Buzzards Bay Grange at the high school reception Thursday evening at Bourne Memorial Community building.
