Bourne High Visitors To Washington In 1909 Shook The President's Hand
Bourne High School senior class trip to Washington this past week recalled to some earlier graduates the very first Washington trip made by Bourne seniors, just 50 years ago.
For several years prior to 1909 the Bourne seniors had conducted a three day sale with the proceeds going to pay for an elaborate dance at graduation, free to all the townspeople.
In the spring of 1909, after the sale, Principal Lamprey suggested to the senior class that they use the. money raised to go to Washington. It cost twenty-five dollars apiece for an all expense week's trip. It was agreed that each senior should take along five dollars for spending money and should dress plainly, not trying to outdo the others.
Miss Marian Cousins, assistant principal, chaperoned the group, and one of the pupils still remembers her admonition, "Don't do anything to embarrass me," . . . and they didn't.
Those in the class were Raymond F. Babcock; Edward Browne; Alsop L. Douglas; John P. B. Ellis; Mary L. Gibbs (now Burrows) of Hyannis; C. Maurice Johnson of Pocasset; John F. Knipschild of Cataumet; Abble J. Nye who later married John P. B. Ellis, now of. Miami, Fla.; and Sarah W, Raymond of Bourne.
The group made the trip by train and by Fall River Line steamer. They stayed at the Riggs House opposite the White House in Washington. One of the highlights of the trip was shaking President Taft's hand of generous size.
