After graduating from Bourne High School in 1965, he attended U. Mass. Amherst where he received a B.A. degree in political science, attended Suffolk University Law School graduating in 1974 with a J.D. degree, cum laude, and was admitted to the Mass. Bar in December, in 1977 he was elected to the position of selectman-assessor in the Town of Bourne and was in office until 1995. He managed to practice law part-time while in office, resuming full-time law practice in 1995.
