Bourne Selectman Enters Race for State Representative
BOURNE – A Bourne selectman is formally entering the race for the 3rd Barnstable State Representative seat.
Democrat Michael Blanton says his longstanding involvement with Cape Cod issues provides him with the knowledge for serving the needs of area residents.
Blanton is the second Democrat to announce a run. He joins Matt Patrick of Falmouth, who lost the seat in 2010 to Republican David Vieira, who is running for re-election.
“The experience I have gained by representing the people on a town and county level over many years has prepared me to deliver innovative solutions to Beacon Hill,” said Blanton.
He previously served as Bourne’s representative to the Cape Cod Commission for eight years and was an elected member to the Bourne Housing Authority.
Blanton, who works are a real estate broker, has also been involved in various civic organizations within Bourne. He was a press and media assistant to Sen. John Kerry in the mid-1990’s.
“I grew up in this area, attended Bourne schools, started a real estate career in Mashpee, and taught hands-on marine science in Woods Hole for many summer seasons,” Blanton said.
He graduated from Bourne High School in 1986, attended Cape Cod Community College and received a B.A in International Relations from Dartmouth College.
Blanton will hold a formal kickoff on Jan. 29, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mezza Luna in Buzzards Bay.
“People feel that government is distant and impersonal. I welcome the opportunity to speak to groups of citizens large and small about their views, needs and goals as a community,” said Blanton.
The 3rd Barnstable District comprises all of Mashpee and sections of Bourne and Falmouth.
