Class of 2016

June 6, 2016

BOURNE

Mother Nature held back her rain Saturday morning as the Bourne High School Class of 2016 marched, danced, and skipped off Jackson Field out into a world where new technology reigns and lifelong challenges await.

It was a moment of hopes and dreams and best wishes being offered. There were some parental sighs of fulfillment -- and a few of relief.

Administrators said the sure-footed and determined class is diverse; it's filled with athletes and actors, scholastic talent, and members from all walks of life.

Valedictorian Hadley Kerr likened life to living on the edge of the ocean where the sailing can be smooth and the waters below “powerful and challenging.” At the end of her remarks, the sunshine broke through persistent cloud cover.

Kerr will attend UMass Amherst come September along with Skylar Fairfield. Athletic standout Molly Neil will be at Holy Cross. Erik Haynes and Erin Shea will study at Wentworth Institute. Dawson Prophett will attend UMass Lowell. James R. McMahon IV will be at Johnson & Wales in Rhode Island.

Prior to the ceremony, BHS Guidance Director Sean Burke said the UMass Amherst campus has regained some New England public university cachet with families sending kids off to college.

The class secured nearly $700,000 in total scholarship assistance; some $80,000 of that total was locally generated.

The class officers are Dawson Prophett, president; Timothy Johnson, vice-president; Annie Cheney, secretary; and Meagan Ladner, treasurer. The class marshals were Lilian Healy and Tess McCabe from the Class of 2017.

BHS Principal Amy Center announced the graduating class includes eight members who also secured associate degrees from Cape Cod Community College.

Jackson Field was filled with families and friends of graduates. The audience spanned the age groups. The style of dress was a step above casual this year. Women mostly wore sundresses while men opted for short-sleeve shirts and slacks, though many were in tank tops and shorts.
