Bourne Seniors Honor Two Classmates Who Didn't Make It
BOURNE — Two friends not among the sea of purple and white gowns receiving diplomas yesterday on the Bourne High School football field were nonetheless on the minds of classmates.
The 142 graduates were asked to remember Emily Flanders and Lucas Trask, two students who died before yesterday's ceremony.
Fighting back tears, and her voice cracking, valedictorian Nicole Roche talked about her "best friend and go-to person" Emily, who succumbed to cystic fibrosis, and "mentor and friend" Lucas, who died suddenly in Florida, according to his obituary.
Quoting Abraham Lincoln, she said, "In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years. How true is this of Luke and Emily."
The senior class made donations in the memory of both students, class president Jesse Galkowski said.
