John was born on May 4, 1946, in Zion, IL. John was a graduate of Zion High School, where he was a member of the barbershop quartet. He loved music and continued singing throughout his life, even if it were only to himself. When he first moved to Memphis, he worked for Holiday Inn as an operations manager. He later went on to work for FedEx, also as an operations manager, before becoming the Southern Region Training Manager, where he retired in 2003. A dedicated Christian, John was a former member of Park Avenue Church of Christ, where he taught Sunday school and Bible studies. He later became a member of Olive Branch Church of Christ. John truly had a generous spirit and was always willing to give to others or offer a helping hand to those in need.

In his free time, John was an avid reader, an excellent cook, and loved spending time outdoors whether he was hunting, fishing, or camping. He enjoyed a good game of bowling and loved spending time with his family. He was the organizer of many family trips. John ensured his passion for hunting, fishing, and cooking was passed down to his children. John's generosity will be missed greatly by those who loved him.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Brieling Herbek and John Edwin Herbek.

John is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Margaret Herbek of Olive Branch; daughter, Sarah Barron (Brian) of Olive Branch; sons, Daniel Herbek (Stephanie) of Libertyville, IL, John Herbek (Sabrina) of Olive Branch, and Robert Herbek (Adrienne) of Collierville, TN; grandchildren, Grant Herbek, Will Herbek, Jory Eads, Jr., Jacob Eads, Jaxon Eads, Isabella Herbek, Sadie Herbek, RJ Herbek, Haley Herbek, Rhett Herbek, Adeline Herbek; great-granddaughter, Valkyrie Eads; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
