Eric Walker Obituary

Eric Walker passed away in 1993.
I had a chance meeting with him, prior to his passing, while fueling up my car at a Chevron station along Veterans Boulevard in Redwood City; whereupon a guy nearby fueling up his car looked familiar, though he looked much slenderer than I previously recalled seeing that familiar face decades prior.
I stepped up to introduce myself, saying I was a Woodside High class of ’72. His eyes brightened up, responding that I had looked familiar to him, too, and acknowledged with his name of Eric Walker.
We exchanged pleasantries with inquiring how we were doing. Eric said he was doing fine, working for the County of San Mateo, and we exchanged best well-wishes when departing.
What profoundly struck me about him, aside from his thin physique, was his friendly, calm, and somber temperament, as the Eric Walker I was familiar with 20 years prior was outgoingly brash. In addition, considering his prominence at WHS, while I was just a ‘face-in-the-crowd’ during those HS years, it was touching for him to say that I looked familiar with him, too.
Years later I found out that Eric had passed away due to A*DS; as cited in SF Gate news, his mother carried out a public awareness campaign.
Years after that, I met a East Palo Alto transfer [to WHS] classmate of his, where he confirmed to me that when Eric was diagnosed with H*V/A*DS, his temperament took a complete change, whereupon Eric became the somber person I had met in the early 1990s.
