Doris E. Wickman, M.D.
Class of 1971
Doris was named a Chicago area top doctor in 2000 by the nationally prestigious Castle Connolly Medical authority. Physicians are nominated by their peers (under Castle Connolly criteria): leading medical specialists, department chairs, residency program directors, vice presidents of medical affairs and presidents of medical centers and specialty hospitals.
Based on the numerous posts on legacy she lived her life...as she did at WB: a very genuine person who exhibited a sharp wit (with a droll sense of humor) and diligence in always going the extra (compassionate) mile for her patients and their families. The following quote from a patient on legacy.com effectively summarizes the formidable courage, class and grace exhibited by Doris:
I was fortunate to have my last exam done by her when she first returned to Female Healthcare in 2008 but she left shortly after returning. Even then, her spirits were the same as always. You never would have known all she was going through. She gave the same care and service as always. I feel like I have lost a family member. There should be more like her in the field of medicine.
On the one-year anniversary of her tragic death, another patient stated on legacy.com:
I think about her often and miss her beautiful smile, wonderful laugh, and compassion. It still is so hard to believe a year has gone by. She will always hold a special place in my heart.
Doris ultimately lost her courageous (over two-year) battle with Leukemia, but not before seeing a daughter graduate with a DVM degree (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine). A loving and lasting tribute as Doris was an avid dog lover.
