Evelyn Louise Spradlin Travis, 80, a resident of Rockingham, VA passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, June 27, 2026. A woman of extraordinary warmth, strength, and grace, she touched countless lives with her unwavering kindness, compassion, wit, and service to others.
Evelyn was born on March 26, 1946, in Roanoke, VA and was the daughter of the late Harold Meador Spradlin and Helen McDonald Spradlin Reynolds.
Evelyn was the 1964 valedictorian graduate of William Byrd High School in Vinton, VA and the 1968 top mathematics student graduate of Roanoke College. Following graduation, Evelyn began her lifelong teaching career. She was a well-respected math teacher for various schools beginning in Roanoke and finally retiring from Turner Ashby High School in 1999. Not only was she a beloved teacher in the classroom, she was a devoted Cub Scout den mother, Brownie leader, and active member of the Waterman Elementary School PTA. When she was not sculpting the minds of her students, she could be found quilting beautiful, intricate bed quilts and crafts, sewing adorable girl and doll dresses, doing puzzles and reading on her iPad, and travelling to favorite vacation destinations. Evelyn loved her children and grandchildren dearly and was a constant fixture and cheerleader at their games and activities. She was a devoted member of Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and was very active with the Presbyterian Women in which she served as a moderator and a circle leader. Evelyn will be deeply missed and forever loved.
On June 7, 1969, she married Harold Richard “Dick” Travis who survives.
Also surviving are her children, Eric Richard Travis and wife Rebecca, Erin Elizabeth Travis Swartley and husband Eric; grandchildren, Christopher Richard Travis and wife Diya, Benjamin Daniel Travis, Claire Katherine Travis, Andrew Eric Travis, Juliette Grace Travis, Alyssa Caitlin Swartley, Caden Travis Swartley; and great-grandson, Vir Machia Travis.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her stepfather, John A. Reynolds; and her grandparents, Fred and Estelle Spradlin and Olin and Ida McDonald.
Reverends Beck Lister and George Evans will conduct a memorial service on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 10, 2026, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association (www.als.org) or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).
