Charles Madison Old, 89, of New Castle, passed away on Monday, July 30, 2012. Charlie was born on his parent's farm in the Catawba Valley section of Botetourt County on September 24, 1922, the youngest of 11 children born to Samuel T. and Bessie Lavender Old. After graduating from William Byrd High School in 1940, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942 and fought in the Pacific theatre during World War II. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve and was called back to active duty in 1950 and fought in the Korean War attaining the rank of Gunnery Sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1952.
Charlie operated a Texaco Service Station on Williamson Road in Roanoke for a short period, then was employed by Carter Machinery Company and later, the N&W Railroad before moving to Craig County, Va., in 1959 to pursue his lifelong desire of being a farmer. He fulfilled his desire by successfully raising beef cattle and hogs for more than 30 years. Charlie was elected to the Craig County Board of Supervisors in the late 1960s and served as chairman of the board for a number of years.
Charlie was an adamant conservative politically and believed that personal honor, integrity and individual responsibility are the traits that this country and its citizens should be guided by.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 35 years, Lena Sharon Old; a sister, Virginia Ferguson, of Roanoke; and five of his children: daughter, Luana Price and husband John of Blue Ridge, sons, Dana of Myrtle Beach, SC; Marlon of New Castle; Sam and wife Donna of New Castle; Patrick of Salem; stepson Roger Horn of New Castle; four grandchildren, Ariel Price Houston, Courtney Young, Samuel Scott Old II and Brittany Frederick; along with three great-grandchildren; and very special furry friends, Daisy and Duke.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian Faye Whitlow Old; and by a son, Robin Lester Old.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be sent to Good Samaritan Hospice of Roanoke, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA 24018.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at Huffman Memorial Park with Mike Bowman officiating in New Castle. Military Rites are being performed. Arrangements by Paitsel Funeral Home. www.paitselfh.com
