Ruby Barbour Willis , 97, of Roanoke, Va., passed peacefully at home on Saturday, May 12, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Unie Barbour; brother, Keith Barbour; and sister, Estelle Barbour Riley. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Allen Willis; daughter, Beth Slovensky and husband, Steve; son, Lee Willis; sister, Arnetta Power; grandchildren, Shannon Wells and husband, Hank, Sarah Slovensky, John Slovensky and wife, Devon, and Ryan Willis; and mother, Nancy Willis. Surviving great-grandchildren are Henry Wells and Emma Ruby Wells. Mrs. Willis was born in Danville, Va., but as a child moved to Roanoke where she graduated from William Byrd High School. She volunteered for military service during World War II and served as a WAVE in the active duty Navy Reserves. She remained in service for 33 months until the end of the war. In 1956, she and Allen became members of the Westhampton Christian Church and attended regularly until she was unable because of declining health. She was a Volunteer Pink Lady for 34 years at Community Hospital of the Roanoke Valley and also provided LOA Meals on Wheels for those in need. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers who provided comfort during the past two years, and especially family friend, Linda Lundy, for her wonderful care and family guidance through this difficult time. Family visitation will be held at Oakeys South Chapel from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Westhampton Christian Church in Roanoke, Va., with burial at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens following the service.
