The absolute force of loving-kindness Ronald Clark Brooks, Sr., 85, of Roanoke County, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 5th, surrounded by his loving family. Ronnie was born April 2, 1941, in Roanoke, VA, the son of Hattie Tuck Brooks and Leo Benjamin Brooks. Ronnie (just barely) graduated from William Byrd High School in 1959; then he joined the army and served until honorably discharged in 1965.
On May 28th, 1960, while under strict military orders not to travel any further than 50 miles over the weekend, Ronnie drove 370 miles from Fort Gordon, Georgia to Bonsack, VA to marry Brenda Saul Brooks at Bonsack Methodist. Ronnie and Brenda remained a loving and faithful couple for over 65 years. His devotion to Brenda was matched only by the boundless love he had for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Ronnie loved talking to people and selling them things they did not know they needed. Starting his sales career with sausage, he transitioned to selling auto parts, eventually becoming part-owner of Atlas Motor Parts, then sole owner of 460 Auto Supply, and then part-owner of Auto East Warehouse. At various times, he also sold cars and antique cars, tractors, rifles and shotguns, knives, farm equipment, houses, and plots of land.
From the day he was married, he was a member of Bonsack United Methodist Church, where he served as a long-time member and chair of the trustees. He also served as the maintenance director at Camp Alta Mons in Shawsville, VA.
Remaining to cherish Ronnie's name are his wife, Brenda Saul Brooks; his children, Rhonda Brooks Gober and Ronald Clark Brooks, Jr. (Lisa Lynn Brooks); former son-in-law, James Richard Gober II; grandchildren, James Richard Gober III (Trey), Jessica Gober Carr (Dylan Alexander Carr), Jocelyn Raina Brooks, and Charlotte Blythe Brooks; great grandchildren, Tyler Gober, Bryson Long, Brooklynn Long, and Charli Carr.
Preceding Ronnie in death are Hattie Tuck Brooks and Leo Benjamin Brooks.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 10th at Oakey's East Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 11th at 11:00 a.m. at Bonsack United Methodist Church, 4493 Bonsack Road, Roanoke, VA 24012. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made in Ronnie's name to Bonsack United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or Camp Alta Mons, 2842 Crockett Springs Road, Shawsville, VA 24162.
